This course does not require any specific pre-course reading, but a pre-course questionnaire will be sent to all participants so that the trainers can assess their needs prior to tailoring the course. Questions will be related to their interest in game- based learning, teaching backgrounds, the age group, class size as well as the language of instruction.
Other participants who are not teachers will be asked about their interest in the course and their expectations from it as well as the level of their familiarity with technology. Letters of enrolment will be sent to all participants. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own laptops if possible, to retain records of any projects & materials that will be created during the course.
This course that consists of input sessions, workshops, and presentations is highly interactive and the participants are expected to take an active role in all sessions, experiencing, but also adding, to the activities while employing the method -“learning by doing”. They will be introduced, during the course, to various game- based activities and technological tools which they can then use in their own classrooms. They can also build up on what was presented by learning how to adapt and improve it according to their (students’) needs.
Participants will create their own resources, which will then be shared, discussed, analyzed and taken as a ready-made material for the teachers to (re)use their own context. A blog will be created for all the course participants as part of the course, and it will be continuously updated afterwards.
The training touches upon many different aspects of game-based education and provides in-depth explanations. Game-based learning increases students’ involvement in classroom activities and enhances their potential growth in many different areas. The course will provide an opportunity for the participants to improve their presentation skills and express themselves freely, encourage them to change their usual mode of thinking and learn how to truly collaborate. They will develop a deeper insight into the concept, strategies, didactic aims and objectives of game-based learning.
The participants will also acquire practical knowledge and become familiar with examples of good teaching practice, as well as share their views and ideas with the other course participants. Furthermore, they will be shown how different kind of games are used in class, those being: across curriculum storytelling, use of stop motion animation in education, use of web 2.0 tools, traditional ‘grandma’ games and their reinvention and digitalization; interactive and guided reading, writing and illustration with very young students etc.
The participants will focus on scenario-based, project and task-oriented learning and teaching. This way of teaching is student-centered and process-oriented which guarantees fruitful and successful work. The training sessions will be led by experienced teachers and mentors. Given their first hand experience in creating innovative products and educational resources, they will successfully guide the participants through the process of creation of new, authentic resources. By way of sharing with students, other teachers, educators, parents etc. the community gains a lot more from education because everyone is involved and willing to take part in the learning process.
